Hiring a car in the Azores in summer is convenient — but rent-a-car complaints spike when the holiday ends: card charges days later, damage the customer denies causing, fines with high admin fees, disputed fuel or cleaning bills.

This article summarises rights and practical steps — without replacing analysis of your contract.

Before you pick up the car

  • Photo and video the vehicle inside and out — wheels, windscreen, dashboard (mileage, fuel);
  • Read the contract: excess, deposit, fuel policy, additional driver, included or extra insurance;
  • Confirm insurance — CDW/SCDW lowers excess but has exclusions (tyres, undercarriage, glass);
  • Check tyres, documents and mandatory equipment (vest, triangle).

These images are the best defence against charges for pre-existing damage.

On return

  • Insist on a joint inspection with staff present;
  • Get written confirmation of return without reservation — or written note of alleged damage;
  • If you disagree, put it in writing on the return form;
  • Keep the final receipt and deposit status.

Later charges on your card

Companies may debit after return — damage, fines, "admin fees". Check:

  • Whether the amount matches the contract;
  • Whether you received prior notice with photos or assessment;
  • Time limits to dispute with the company and bank (chargeback, where applicable).

Card chargeback is not automatic — it depends on the network, reason and whether you tried to resolve with the company first.

Pass-through traffic fines

The rent-a-car may pay the fine and charge you the amount plus an admin fee (sometimes €30–50 or more). This is common if the contract allows. You can:

  • Challenge the fine with the authorities (short deadline — see our summer fines article);
  • Negotiate the admin fee if disproportionate;
  • Demand a copy of the offence notice and payment proof.

If you were not driving, driver identification follows specific rules — do not ignore notices.

Damage you did not cause

If charged for scratches or bumpers that were already there:

  • Submit pick-up photos/video;
  • Request independent assessment if the amount is high;
  • Written complaint to the company and, if needed, consumer arbitration or court action.

Accident in a hire car

  • Follow road accident steps;
  • Notify the rent-a-car and insurer immediately;
  • Do not sign releases under pressure at the scene.

Tourists after leaving Portugal

Claims can be made by email; keep contract and evidence. EU consumers may use European consumer networks for companies in another member state. Limitation periods apply.
