Until 15 September 2026, PSP is reinforcing patrols at beaches, historic centres, airports and summer events. Pickpocketing, phone theft, bag theft and break-ins to parked cars rise in this season — for tourists and residents alike.

This article explains legal steps after theft or robbery, without replacing advice on your specific case.

Theft vs. robbery — what is the difference?

  • Theft — taking without violence or threat (e.g. wallet on the beach, bag from a broken-into car without confronting the thief);
  • Robbery — taking with violence or threat (e.g. street mugging).

The distinction matters for criminal classification and investigation priority. In both cases: report it.

What to do immediately

  1. Safety first — move away from danger; in violent robbery, call 112;
  2. PSP or GNR — complaint in person or by phone; get a report number;
  3. Block cards and phone (carrier and bank);
  4. Change passwords if the phone had banking apps or email;
  5. List stolen items — phone IMEI, serial numbers, invoices if you have them.

Without a police report, insurance and compensation claims become much harder.

Travel insurance and home policies

  • Tourists: check whether travel insurance covers baggage and personal items;
  • Residents: home or motor policies may cover theft from vehicles (per policy terms);
  • Cards: some cover fraudulent use after theft.

Insurers will want the report, an inventory and receipts — the better the proof, the smoother the claim.

Valuables at the beach or on trails

Leaving bags unattended, phones in view or jewellery on the beach increases risk. Legally, theft remains unlawful — but negligence can affect insurance negotiations. Use hotel safes, carry the minimum and do not leave documents in the car.

Tourist already back home

You can still file a complaint with PSP/GNR with details of the facts; documents can follow. For international travel insurance, act within policy deadlines (many require notice within 24–72 hours).

Violence or injury

If there was physical violence, besides criminal complaint you may have rights to compensation — through victim support or civil action against an identified assailant. Injuries should be medically documented.
